Release/Split Grip

Using a mid-iron, grip the club so there is a gap between the hands. Take half swings, back and through. Allow the rotation of the right hand over the left. This is what is called the RELEASE. This action squares the clubface at impact. Failure to return the clubface to square is the major cause of the slice.

After some practice swings, begin hitting half shots and then full shots. Concentrate on feeling the release and try to duplicate that action when you hit balls with your normal grip. Let your arms roll naturally.

Purpose
  1. To promote a good release of the arms and hands. The major cause of the slice is an open clubface at impact. You can eliminate this problem by doing drills that encourage a rolling over of the arms and hands during the downswing. To prevent the slice, the other fault you have to guard against is an outside-to-inside swing path or cutting across the ball. (See the other anti-slice drills such as the Right Foot Back Drill.)
  2. To ensure hands are set correctly during downswing and follow-though. Halfway up in your backswing the toe of the club points skyward. As you swing down and rotate through impact, the clubface closes and halfway into your follow-through, the toe of the club should point skyward again. This is proof of a good relaxed .release. of the arms and hands.

Do's and Don'ts
Practice this drill whenever you start slicing or pushing shots to the right. Check to make sure the toe of the club is pointing skyward halfway into the follow-through.
